2015 BMW i8 – Review

BMW2015 BMW i8 has been concentrating on some of the future cars that will determine the future of the company. Hence, the German automaker has been working on various new cars that can offer better fuel economy and driving performance. While BMW has been focusing on 2014 i3 that have been selling out in various market the auto company is now concentrating on 2015 BMW i8 that will be an ideal sports car that will be launched in the market in the year 2015. Here we take a quick look at the top features of the vehicle in the BMW i8 review below.

Exterior

  • BMW has come up with the same Life Drive construction philosophy that is seen in the BMW i3 model earlier and the automaker claims that they will continue to have the same kind of construction on all I models in the future.
  • BMW has also decided to make use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic material that will be used along with lightweight chassis made from rigid aluminum. Although, the new BMW i8 looks sporty is not exactly a sports car designed for race tracks and that have immense speed performance.
  • The car roof is carbon fiber while bumper and fenders are made from composite materials and hood and outer door panels are aluminum. BMW has also decided to make use of Gorilla Glass for the rear window to add sound deafening option.

Interior

  • While there is no much information about the interiors of the car but the driving seat is low and therefore it offers a sporty feel to the driver and also provides better front side visibility for better driving experience.
  • The driver seat gets electronic adjustment that makes it comfortable for the driver to get into the right position. The center console is not revealed so far but it offers Driving Experience Control that allows the driver to toggle between Comfort and Eco Pro mode. While Comfort mode is basically to enjoy the sporty performance of the car, Eco Pro mode is more about fuel efficiency and getting better miles on the card.

Performance

  • Under the hood, BMW i8 is a hybrid plug-in e-sports car that can offer better performance to the users. The car gets 1.5 liter B38 transverse three cylinder turbocharged gas engine that produces 228 horsepower and 236 lb feet of torque. The engine is mated with six speed automatic transmission.
  • The engine is mated with Bosch produced electric motor that generates 129 horsepower and 184 lb feet of torque and uses energy from 6.4 kWh lithium ion battery pack. It also has two speed GKN transmission that can operate at low speeds. There is another smaller electric motor that collects the energy and charges the battery.
  • Combined together engine and electric motor produces 357 horsepower and 420 lb feet of torque. The battery takes around two hours to charge considering that the battery pack is not too large. The car offers acceleration of zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and gets the top speed of 155 mph.
